BANGKOK, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- World No. 2 Brazil and No. 5 Türkiye advanced to the semifinals of the 2025 FIVB Women's World Championship with quarterfinal victories on Thursday.
Brazil beat France 27-25, 33-31, 25-19 in a rematch of their Group C clash - won by Brazil in five sets - to set up a semifinal against Olympic champion and world No. 1 Italy on Saturday.
Trailing 19-15 in the second set, Brazil ran off four points in a row to level up at 19-19 and went on to build a 24-22 lead, but France answered with three straight points to go 25-24 up. The two sides traded the lead at 31-31, before Julia Gambatto Kudiess had a smash and Gabriela Braga Guimaraes converted on Brazil's fifth set point with a smart play.
"I think it could have been different if we won this set, but that's life, that's Brazil. We knew that they have a lot of experiences," said Helena Cazaute, who notched 20 points for France. "But I'm still happy about what we did in this competition. I think we show a lot of good things. So I can't wait to come back next summer to work with these girls, because we really have an amazing team. I feel proud today."
Julia Isabelle Bergmann led five Brazilians in double scoring digits with 17 points and Guimaraes, known as "Gabi", added 13, and attributed the victory to her team's confidence and mutual trust.
"I think the biggest difference [from the 3-2 victory over France in the group stage] was how we started the match - our approach from the beginning was more focused and aggressive," said Gabi.
"France played at the same level, pushing us hard and never giving up. We did the same; we didn't give up and believed in each other, giving confidence to one another."
"Once again, players coming from the bench helped us in a difficult moment. This is what we need. The same thing will happen against Italy," added Gabi, who said Brazil would need to be aggressive to beat Italy on Saturday.
"It's a strong and solid team that makes few mistakes, plays very aggressively, and has a strong foundation. So we know we need to be aggressive, and our blocking and defense must perform well."
"We need to take advantage of the chances they give us and the ones we create ourselves, especially during transition. They have quality, but so do we. And we need to believe in our system."
Later on Thursday, Türkiye defeated the United States 25-14, 22-25, 25-14, 25-23 to set up a semifinal with Japan.
Ebrar Karakurt led Türkiye with 23 points, with Melissa Teresa Vargas adding 19. ■
